Chapter 62

“Is this the last boat?”

The occupants of the boat didn’t answer his question, but one of the old men from the first boat stepped forward and nodded his head. Freddy Ivanov counted the occupants, noting the number.

“How many prisoners were in that ship? Do you know?”

The old man nodded again. “Twenty, sir. The lady freed every last one of us.”

Twenty. That meant Tess managed to free all of them, like the man said.

Except she wasn’t in any of the boats.

He looked around the last set of survivors, then took note of the dirty-looking blonde woman at the side, who was eyeing her surroundings warily. Those wandering eyes locked in on him, and she stiffened.

“Miss, your rescuer...have you seen her?”

The woman relaxed, realizing he was one of the good guys. The immediate shift into trust made him frown, but there wasn’t time for a scolding as he took in her tired words.

“The captors came out when she was lowering the boat, so she had to cut us down. I think I saw her diving in the water and swimming in the opposite direction.”

Just as he predicted, and just as the tracker indicated. He couldn’t afford to track her down now.

He still had prisoners to get to safety.

Freddy got to it right away, urging them to help him set the boats aside and in less conspicuous places, then cover them up with the branches and weaved camouflage grass that he’d already prepared. When that was done, he urged them to file into a line, keeping the strongest of the prisoners at the back and leading the way at the front, eyes and ears open in case they were attacked. But no attack came as they trekked across the forest, and they finally arrived at the highway where a van was waiting on the other side. He tapped the back of the bus, waiting for it to open.

Out came our best road leaders: Ethan and Lock.

Ethan stepped forward, a friendly but tentative smile already in place. His tattoos were hidden underneath his leather jacket, and the all-black ensemble lent to his overall cool look.

“My name’s Ethan, and we offer you a sanctuary to escape from your captors. We won’t enslave you, and you’ll be safe there until you decide to leave again.”

The older man who’d answered most of Freddy’s questions earlier stepped forward now, acting as the leader. Despite his bloodied clothes and the obvious bruises all over him, he didn’t cower down, eyeing Ethan back almost speculatively. “How do we know you won’t just enslave us again?”

“We can only give you our word for now, but please allow us to show you what we mean by our sanctuary. You’ll see other freed prisoners there—humans—living normal lives. You are free to leave at any time.”

Of course, they would only be shown part of the sanctuary, separate from the true one, to make sure they weren’t compromised before the new set of humans fully entered the fray. It was a necessary precaution, as their home was the most important base there was.
